And why it took me two years.
This book is a visual journey of my two-year struggle working for a charismatic but toxic boss. As a junior I wrestled with self-confidence and showed signs of burnout. Eventually, I found the courage to leave this job.
During this turbulent period, I started drawing. Paper was where I could express my emotions. This helped me understand what was happening and cope. This book exists out of 45 illustrations all made during my daily commute to this job.
“I just read your book in one go; what a beautiful book you have created. I recognize the struggles, which made me feel less alone. The super fun and creative illustrations really made me laugh." E
"It's ingenious how you put your story on paper in words and images. Highlighting a subject that often remains in the shadows." J
"It is a very inspiring story. I think that this is of great value for anyone, both managers and employees, working within an unhealthy corporate culture." W
When I left the job, I had a lot of one-on-one conversations with colleagues. Here I openly shared my negative experiences and struggles. And I was stunned to hear that my co-workers had similar experiences in their careers but never brought it up.
By sharing my story, I want to break the conversation open. I want people to assess their work culture. And start asking questions about themselves as well as their employer. I believe we can create change if we speak up with vulnerability and empathy.
If you doubt yourself daily and you feel like an imposter and can’t stop overthinking what you said in that meeting.
I hope my story lets you know that you are not alone and that your feelings are valid. I hope it encourages you to be brave and make better choices for yourself.
Curious how I came up with the idea and how I started writing?
